William was born in Flowerdale, Victoria in 1912, youngest of six children of Thomas John Collins (b1879 at Strath Creek, Victoria) and Mary Ann Byrne (b1873 in Melbourne, Victoria). Thomas and Mary Ann married in 1904 in Flowerdale, Yea where they raised their family and Thomas was a Labourer and Farmer.
William worked as a Labourer/Farm Hand in Yea before enlisting n the Army in 1942. In 1944 in Melbourne, William married Muriel Sara Stevenson (b1908 in Launceston, Tasmania) - Muriel was a Teacher in Melbourne. William and Muriel lived in Flowerdale and Melbourne, where they raised their family and William was a Labourer. William died in 1983 and Muriel in 2002.
