Donald Kyle - 5404
Donald Kyle was born in Gundagai, Wynyard, in 1895 annd later lived at 'Mara', Roscoe Street, Bondi, Sydney, New South Wales. (1) His father Wiliam Edward Kyle resided in Gundagai, New South Wales in 1895. His father was an alderman in the Gundagai Council. His parents were William Edward Kyle and Marion Amy Kyle (née BRUCE) and they registered and married in 1893 in New South Wales. (2) His father passed away on 15 August 1910 at Gundagai when he was 49 years old. In December of 1911, Kyle qualified for the qualifying certificate examination Division 5 and went to Sydney Technical High School in 1912. (3)
Kyle attested on 23 August 1915 and when he was 20 years old, signing the oath on 27 September 1915. He embarked from Sydney on board HMAT A35 Berrima on 17 December. This led to the recognition of the Roll of Honour in Sydney Technical High School in December 1915. (5)
Kyle was ranked private in the 7th Field Company Engineers, Reinforcement 2. On 1916 March 18, he was taken on strength by the 14th Field Company Engineers from Reinforcement 2, 7th Field Company Engineers. (6) Later on 25 November 1916, he was sick and went to hospital in France
He rejoined the 14th field company from hospital on the December 5.
Kyle later had a furlough in England in 1917 August 3 and rejoined 2 weeks later. (8) Then, Donald Kyle was transferred to “K: Supply Column" from the 14th Field Company Engineers and taken on the strength where he was remastered as private on 5 February 1918. He was taken on the strength by the Australian Corps military company and transferred to the “K” Supply Column on March 3 1918. (9)
On 22 September, he was admitted to 1st Auxiliary Hospital as he was sick while on leave in the United Kingdom in Fairfield, where he was admitted with an abscess and gland on the right side of the neck. (10) On 30 October, Kyle was discharged from 1st Auxiliary Hospital at Harefield as he had an abscess on the right side of his neck and gland and he was on the balance of leave which he proceeded overseas on the 31. (11)
Donald Kyle rejoined his unit from 1st the Australian Auxiliary Hospital at Harefield as he was sick while on leave on 1 November 1918. By 1919 March 1, Kyle had 8 days leave to Paris and a fortnight later on March 15.
After he survived the war, Donald Kyle returned to Australia on 11 June 1919 where on 2 July, he disembarked to Australia, Sydney. On July 5, he was discharged from the AIF. (13) Kyle's occupation is as an engineer, so in Australia, he later worked at a company called Marine Engineer’s Assistant Mort’s Dock Engineering Company, in Balmain. (14) His mother later passed away on 25 July 1950 at Rose Bay. Donald Kyle died on 4 November 1970 when he was 75 years old at Royal Newcastle Hospital. (15)
