MILTON ALCHIN
Official advice has been received by Mr. and Mrs. T. Alchin, of Wyalong, that their son, Milton, met his death on 28th September, 1942, when he was on a torpedoed prison ship.
The ship, the Lisbon Maru, was carrying prisoners who were being transferred from Hongkong to Shanghai.
In the early days of the war Milton was on the GPO staff in Sydney, and he volunteered for special work in the Intelligence Section of the Naval Dockyards.
Early in 1941 he went to Hong kong, and was there when the city was taken in December of that year.
He was born in Wyalong, and was 23 years of age at the time of his death.
On leaving school he worked at both Wyalong and West Wyalong Post Offices, where he became well known and popular with residents of both towns.
Since he was captured his parents received only one card from him, and that arrived in December of last year—two years after his death.
His widow resides in Sydney, and, in addition to his parents, he leaves one sister (Mrs. Geo. Abbott, of Wyalong).
