20 Apr 1918: Honoured Military Medal, MM awarded "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on our line between ALBERT and DERNANCOURT on 5 April 1918. When every other man on his gun had been wounded and although he himself had been badly shaken he continued the service of the gun single-handed until reinforced."
9 Aug 1918: Wounded AIF WW1, 2041, Gassed (France) incurring severe shell gas burns to face and hands. Transferred to England where he died of wounds and heart failure.
