Son of William Owens and Charlotte Jane Owens of Murphy Street, Wangaratta, Victoria.
Prior to enlisting William had been a member of the Camperdown Rifle Club.
Commenced return to Australia on 10 June 1919 aboard HT Port Lyttleton disembarking on 5 August 1919
