Son of Mrs Sarah Bassett, James Street, Paddington, Queensland
Frederic James (Jim) Bassett enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 22 May 1916 at Maryborough, Queensland. The 22 year old was assigned to the 52nd Battalion, 6th Reinforcements. While serving on the Western Front his right leg was injured after it was badly entangled in barbed wire. He was invalided back to England for treatment and then returned to Australia on 24 October 1917. While in England he met his cousin, Minnie Phipps, who later joined him in Australia. The couple married in November 1919.
