John Verran was born in 1893, in Walhalla, Victoria. His hometown was North Adelaide, South Australia. He was married to a woman by the name of Mrs Evelyn Edith Verran. He enlisted into the war on the 4th of May, 1916, when he was 23 years old. He served on the Western Front for 1 year and 322 days (of which 41 days were abroad). A few medals which he earned include: British War Medal and Victory Medal. He worked as a labourer prior to enlisting into the war. He embarked from Adelaide on the 12th of August 1916. He disembarked on the 30th September, 1916, in Devonport, England, and marched in to 5th Australian Division Base Depot on the 12th of January, 1917.
While in Europe, he was repeatedly hospitalised for influenza and other illnesses, and in July 1917 was sent home for discharge due to nephritis. His last unit was the 32nd Infantry Battalion. John Verran passed away on the 9th of October, 1931 at the age of 38. He was buried at the West Terrace Cemetery, Adelaide, South Australia.
