From Sue Guinan, Tasmania in the Great War
Pte Walter Henry William Rowsthorn
Born 6th February 1882 Evandale Tasmania the son of William and Rebecca Rowsthorn (nee Aitken) a farmer he embarked Melbourne 18th February 1916 on board “HMAT Ballarat” with the 12th Infantry Battallion.
He was a sergeant in the Penguin Light Horse before he enlisted
He was killed in action 6th April 1917 in France and is commemorated on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial, Villers-Bretonneux, Picardie, France.
Reverend W T Abbott had the painful task recently of conveying to Mr and Mrs W Rowsthorn Penguin of the death of their son Lance Corporal Walter Rowsthorn between April 6th and 10th. The deceased soldier was for years in the A.L.H. Penguin troop and saw some 14 months service in Europe. He was greatly esteemed by his comrades and friends.
