He was one of four brothers who served in the Great War. One brother fell in action; Aubrey returned to Australia 9 February 1919. He was a Gunner with the 8th Field Artillery Brigade, having enlisted on 1 November 1916-Regimental number 33090. His unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria, on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on 11 May 1917, at which time, Aubrey was 25.
