"...1166 Signaller Frederic Charles 'Freddie' Pratt, F Company, 3rd Battalion, of Woodstock, NSW. Sig Pratt enlisted on 17 August 1914 and embarked from Sydney aboard HMAT Euripides on 20 October 1914. Frederick (or Frederic) Charles PRATT was born at Coolac, NSW, on 12th January 1885. He was raised at Woodstock, NSW, and he went to school there. He started his career with the NSW Government Railways and Tramways on 13th September 1906 when he began work as a porter in the Orange District of the Railways’ Traffic Branch. On 10th July 1909 he became a 3rd class shunter in the same District and the following year, on 10th September 1910, he went up a grade to 2nd class shunter. On 6th December 1911 he transferred to the Goulburn District with the position of guard. As a guard he transferred to the Eskbank (Lithow) District on 13th December 1912 and then transferred to the Sydney District on 27th October 1913. On 17 August 1914 he was released from duty to join the Expeditionary Forces.

Frederick joined the AIF on 17th August 1914 with the rank of Private (Service Number 1166). He was allotted to the 3rd Infantry Battalion. He nominated his father, Mr W F Pratt of Woodstock, NSW, as his next of kin.

The 3rd Infantry Battalion embarked for Egypt in October 1914 and arrived there on 2nd December 1914. He left Egypt on 5th April 1915 to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, which was bound for the Gallipoli Peninsula. The 3rd Infantry Battalion took part in the ANZAC landing on 25th April 1915 as part of the second and third waves.

It was during subsequent operations on Gallipoli that Frederick was killed in action at Shrapnel Gully on 19th May 1915.

Frederick’s grave is in the 4th Battalion Parade Ground Cemetery, Gallipoli Peninsula, Canakkale Province, Turkey. His place of association is Woodstock, NSW.
