From Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery
Served during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.
54 years ago today, on the 27th September 1966, Temporary Corporal Frederick Michael Howley, 7th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Reg No-1317), carter and rugby league player from Chinchen Street, Islington, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 75. CATHOLIC 3-90. 117.
Born at Islington, New South Wales on the 30th September 1890 to Thomas and Jane Isabella Howley; husband of Mildred Howley nee Dennis (married 1921, Hamilton, N.S.W., died?), Frederick enlisted June 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Admitted to hospital 15.4.1917 (kicked by horse, right leg), Mr Howley returned home August 1919, being discharged on the 26th September 1919.
Frederick’s name has been inscribed on the St. Mary's-Marist Bros' School (Newcastle) Honour Roll
Wickham Municipal District Roll of Honour Board (1), unveiled on the 26th February 1916, 190 names now inscribed, photo courtesy of Ed Tonks, O.A.M.). A member of the Northern Branch Rugby League.
There is no headstone at Mr Howley’s resting place, forgotten, so April 2019 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
