Alexander William Allan served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. His first service was as a Private S.N. 307 in the 3rd Queensland Mounted Infantry, Boer War. His second service was as a Private S.N. 3008 in the 42nd Infantry Battalion AIF, WW1. He was invalided and discharged on both occassions due to recurring Rheumatism. 

He married Juliet MacDonald on 16 Aug 1906 and they had four children. (source AWM Boer War Nominal Roll, Murray p. 473; National Archives Australia WW1 service record).
