Add my storyBiography
Richard Sheldon was the eldest son of Alfred and and Ada Skelton- Sheldon and had two siblings, Wilfred and Henrietta. Richard was a farmer. He signed up for military service with a group of his friends most of whom did not return from WWI. Richard and his mates joined the Australian Light Horse Battalion 1st Pioneer Batt, AIR, 7th ReINFe. Richard and his friends took their horses with them. Richard and several of his friends were posted to Passenchendaele, where he served and was critically wounded. Richard was posted as 'missing in action' for several months which was devastating news for his family. He was finally located in a London convalescent home for Australian soldiers. Richard returned home to Sydney on crutches. Shortly after his return he and his family left their Sydney Residence and went up to their Orchard at Tuggerah Lakes to help him recuperate. He died shortly after from the Spanish Influenza and pneumonia as his resistance was very low.
Just before his death Richard became engaged to his sweetheart who became a nurse and never married. Richard's horse was never returned to Australia...... Richard Skelton-Sheldon was my maternal Uncle.
