Son of Edwin Francis Denby Oliver and Mary Oliver nee Saunders of Melbourne, Victoria.

Husband of Hilda Louisa Oliver nee Clayton C/- Mrs J Clayton, Payneham Road, Payneham, SA. Bertie and Hilda married on 18 November 1916 in the Methodist Church, Payneham, SA.

Commenced return to Australia on 19 June 1919 aboard HT Miltades disembarking on 5 August 1919 at Melbourne for onward travel to Adelaide.

Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal

Started working at the Register as an assistant reader before transferring to the Advertiser. He joined the Mail when it was founded in 1912 and became the editor. Moving to the News in 1928 as a political writer and became chief of staff.
