Private Arthur Francis Harris (Service No:7070) enlisted in the AIF on 1 October 1917, and was a Private attached to 25th Infantry Battalion on 16 November 1917 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney en route for Southampton via Suez on board SS Canberra. Private Harris served on the Western Front, was was WiA in France on 25 May 1918 (Gas Shell). On 18 July 1919 Private Harris embarked from England for Melbourne on board HT Takada, and was attached to 9th Infantry Battalion at Dicharge on 2 October 1919.
Arthur was born in Toowoomba QLD in 1885, third of four children of James Edward Harris (b1851 in Hampshire, England) and Elizabeth Jane Caddick (b1858 in Surrey, England). James was a Coke Hawker in 1876 when he immigtared, arriving in Brisbane on board the British Nation; Elizabeth had arrived in Moreton Bay in 1873 on board the Royal Dane. James and Elizabeth married in 1880 in Bundaberg, and lived at Yalebone Creek via Roma and in Toowoomba before settling in Brisbane. James worked as a Carpenter until his death in 1911 (he died of injuries received falling from a moving tram).
Arhtur worked as a Furniture Packer in Brisbane, where in 1908 he married Emily Maud Hicks (b1877 in Brisbane, QLD). Arthur and Emily settled in Brisbane, where they raised their son and Arthur was a Dispatch Clerk when he enlisted in the AIF in 1917. Following his Discharge from the Army, Arthur worked as a Labourer at Dalgonaly Station via Julia Creek, and in the mid 1920s he and Emily settled in Brisbane where Arthur worked as a Shop Assistant. Emily died in 1960 and Arthur in 1962.
