Donald served with Australian forces under various service numbers-1669 1896 30765 1685. He also served 2 years with the Royal Naval Reserve in England and with the Golspie Volunteer Artillery in his native county of Sutherland-shire, Scotland. He was the son of Adam Sutherland and Kate Sutherland, of 5 Sutherland Street, Golspie. He had a sister, Mrs Bremner of 177 Coventry Street, South Melbourne and sometime of 119 Stork Street, Melbourne. He was wounded in action more than once.He survived the Great War and returned to Australia.
