Son of William James Semmens and Mary Elizabeth Semmens nee Bauer of St Lucia Estate, Toowong, QLD.

Brother of Robert Semmens who was killed in action on 25 July 1916 while serving with the 9th Battalion and has no known grave. His name appears on the Villers-Bretonneux Memorial

Commenced return to Australia on 13 July 1919 aboard HT Persic disembarking on 2 September 1919 at Sydney for onward travel to Brisbane

On 19 January 1929 William married Ada Winnifred Wyeth in QLD
