101 years ago today, on the Thursday afternoon of the 24th July 1924, Private William George King, 53rd Battalion (Reg No-3242), miner from Merewether, New South Wales and "Thirlmere", 7 Bruce Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., father of three, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 35. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) H SW. 63.

Born at Narrabri, New South Wales on the 7th May 1889 to William Boyd and Annie King; husband of Jane Ellen (Nellie) King nee Donnison, married 21.10.1916, Wallsend, N.S.W., died 20.7.1931, Hurstville, N.S.W., age 54, sleeping here, from Ganny Road, Pittown, Wallsend, New South Wales and John Street, Brookstown, Wallsend, N.S.W. (1917) and 51 off Power Street, Georgeville, Islington, N.S.W. (1918), George enlisted on the 25th September 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A29 Suevic on the 11th November 1916.

Disembarked Devonport, England 30.1.1917.

Admitted to hospital 8.3.1917 (tonsillitis).

Commenced return to Australia 10.1.1918.

George arrived home on the 3rd March 1918, being discharged medically unfit (Diffuse Alveolar Haemorrhage) on the 18th May 1918.

Not entitled to Victory Medal, only British War Medal.
Mr. King’s name has been inscribed on the Merewether (Mitchell Park) Memorial Gates and The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Percy’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
