Henry Leonard Porter was born on 13/1/1892 in Dublin, South Australia, he was the son of Jonathon Porter. Through his childhood, he attended the school at Dublin for his education. Before he enlisted he worked as a Labourer
Henry enlisted in the Australian Army on 30/11/1914 at Oaklands in the suburbs of Adelaide, South Australia. At the time of his enlistment, he was 22 years and 11 months old, stood at 5 foot tall and weighed 12 stone. Henry embarked 8 February 1915. He arrived in the Middle East and after some more training fought at Gallipoli until he became unwell.
On 24/8/15 he was sent to Malta due to diarrhoea. He was brought there by the hospital ship “Andania”. After recovering from this, he was shipped off to Egypt on the ship H.T “Karoa” 26/9/15. He proceeded back to Gallipoli in early October. After the evacuation of Gallipoli he returned to Egypt in December 1915. He continued to serve in the Middle East. Henry was appointed Lance Corporal in May and attended a School of Instruction for 3 weeks. He suffered from another bout of diarrhoea in August. On the 13/11/1916, he was admitted to the 14th General hospital, due to suffering from Psoriasis. He recovered and was taken on strength with the 9th Light Hore 29/12/16.
During 1917 he continued to serve in the Middle East. He was in trouble in September 1917 for failing to salute an officer and his rank reverted to Trooper. In August 1918 he returned to hospital with Malaria and once recovered took a short period of leave before returning to his unit. However, he then caught influenza in October and returned to hospital.
On the 13/2/1919 he returned to Australia on the ship “Karoola” After spending a few months home in Australia, he finally was discharged on 13/6/1919 due to being medically unfit. His total service time was 4 years 104 days.
Henry Porter died on 6/9/1978 at the age of 86 years, 7 months and 24 days from unknown causes. He is buried in Barmera Cemetery.
