George Alfred MORRIS (Service Number 1149) born at Ultimo on 7th June 1889. He joined the Tramways as a shop boy at the Ultimo Powerhouse in December 1908. He  progressed over the following 5½ years to fitters’ labourer.  He was released from duty to join the Army in August 1914.

He was wounded at Gallipoli in 1915. He was promoted to Sergeant and subsequently to Company Sergeant Major. 

He was sent to France with the 3rd Battalion in 1916. He was killed in action in July but awarded the Military Cross posthumously for:

‘conspicuous gallantry when commanding the defence of a dangerous “dead end”.  He set a fine example of determination and beat off with bombs many heavy attacks by the enemy.’

 He was buried in Pozières British Cemetery.
