"Deaths in Sydney
Edward Cortis, 67, Sydney surveyor, dropped dead on Manly wharf while boarding a ferry yesterday morning. Cortis had been holidaying at Manly, and it is thought that the strain of lifting his luggage hastened his collapse." - from the Newcastle Morning Herald and Miners' Advocate 07 Jan 1946 (nla.gov.au)
