Clifford enlisted with the Australian Imperial Force on 14th June 1915 and he embarked for Egypt with the 8th reinforcements of the 24th Australian Infantry Battalion. He served at Gallipoli where he distinguished himself with gallantry at Lone Pine, after the ANZAC Corps evacuation he returned to Alexandria, Egypt on 10th January 1916. He was appointed an acting Corporal on 20th February and he embarked for France with the battalion and they disembarked at Marseilles and proceeded to the Western Front. Clifford was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on 6th April and he was commissioned in the field, and appointed a 2nd Lieutenant on 12th August. In September 1916 it was announced that he had received a Military Medal (MM)for his Gallantry at Lone Pine, Gallipoli. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 1st January 1917 and he was wounded in action (1st occasion) on 3rd May and he was evacuated to the United Kingdom with gunshot wounds to his legs. He rejoined the battalion on 10th January 1918 and he was wounded in action (2nd occasion) on 8th March however he remained on duty. On 22nd March he was wounded in action (3rd occasion) and he was evacuated to England suffering from the effects of gas poisoning. Clifford rejoined the battalion in France on 29th June and he was wounded in action (4th occasion) on 5th October and he was evacuated to hospital in England with shrapnel wounds to his right arm. He again rejoined his battalion in France on 31st December 1918 where he remained till they returned to the United Kingdom to wait transportation to Australia. On 21st June 1919 he embarked for Australian and he arrived at Melbourne on 13th August and he was discharged from the Australian Imperial Force (AIF).

"Night 6/7th November 1915 in Lone Pine, O.C. 24th Battalion, Gallipoli when men from the 24th Battalion under Captain Barber captured a Turkish tunnel, two parties of volunteers were called for to explore underground enemy works. Ellis and Nichols, 24th Battalion volunteered to lead these parties. They gallantry entered the enemy's works and covered the advance of engineer exploring party."
