Leonard Victor Lawton
Born abt. 1894 in East Brunswick, Melbourne, Victoria
He was one of eight siblings to William Henry Lawton & Annie Maria Durbin & had two half–siblings from his mother & Frederick Ryall Crawford
A 19yo Carrier Driver, he enlisted in the AIF in Melbourne on 2 Nov 1914 & was allocated S/No. 1375 as Private with the 7th Battalion's, 2nd Reinforcement
He embarked on 2 Feb 1915 & upon arriving in Egypt he was re–allocated to the 5th Battalion's, 3rd Reinforcement with new S/No. 1359
He landed at Anzac with the battalion on 25 Apr 1915 as part of the second wave
Ten days after the landing, the 2nd Brigade (including the 5th BN) was transferred from Anzac Cove to Cape Helles to assist in the attack on Krithia aka the Second Battle of Krithia
It was here between 8/9 May that Lawton was wounded in action, suffering a "BW" to his chest, arm & right side (BW has been used to describe both a bullet wound & bomb wound)
He was evacuated back to Egypt on the 9th being admitted to hospital in Heliopolis on the 23rd
It is unclear if he re–join the fighting at Gallipoli, though in Mar 1916 & while in Egypt, he was again admitted to hospital with a fractured foot
He returned to Australia in May 1916 & was discharged medically unfit in Aug
