William HAMLYN
Enlisted in the 25/3 Light Horse on 9th Nov 1916. No 3171. Admitted to Lt Horse Reinforcement Mitcham 28 Nov 1916. Embarked on the SS 'Karmala' in February 1917 for Egypt. Disembarkment "Karmala" at Suez 11 Mar 1917. Admitted to 14 General Hospital Cairo with Bronchitis and Pulmonary Tuberculosis on 26 Apr 1917. Admitted to 4th Light Horse Field Ambulance 22 May 1917. Proceeded to Rest Camp 3 Oct 1917. 13 Oct 1917 returned to Duty. He suffered a critical gun shot chest wound on the 1st Nov 1917 at Beersheba. 2 Nov 1917 transferred to 74th CC Stn. 44th sty Hosp Kantara 11 Nov 1917. Admit to 14th AGH ex 44th Station Hosp 13 Nov 1917 Abbasinia. GSW Chest Dangerously ill. Condition described as a gaping wound in his left chest with pus and air escaping. Empyema and Pneumothorax.10 Dec 1917, Bullet in the Lung tissue (X Ray Report) Removal of Bullet not advised. Reports and Telegrams home continued Dangerously ill until finally 17th Jan 1918 'out of danger', what blessed news that must have been back home in Yorketown. Medical Board signatures Dr. Athel. J.H.Saw, Lt-Col., Dr. W.R.C. Mainwaring, Major., Dr.E. Elmslie Brown, Major. 14th A.G.H.
Once he was on the mend spent time convalescing in Cairo. 15th Feb 1918 embarked on "Ulysses" Pt Said for his return to Australia. Disembarked 3rd Mar 1918, Melbourne, then overland to Adelaide. Discharged 22nd April 1918 4th MD. Medically unfit for Duty. Granted a pension £2/5/- per fortnight as from 23/4/1918.
Bill was part of the Historic Light Horse Charge at Beersheba, Gaza on the 31st of October 1917. (Still being honoured on this day 30th October 2019. Teresa Thomson)
