Biography contributed by Geoffrey Gillon

Lachlan was a Gunner with the Australian Field Artillery-106th Australian (Howitzer) Battery

He was born in Tain, Ross-shire in the Highlands of Scotland to Murdo MacKay [died 8th June 1905] and Helen Wallace MacKay [died 28th February 1901]-They are interred in St Duthus Old Burial Ground in Tain. The inscription on their tomb details the names, dates and places of death of their many sons, including that of Lachlan. Lachlan attested at Bundaberg, Queensland on 9th November 1915 giving his age as 42 and 4 months and stating his next of kin as William MacKay of Tain.

During his war service in France, he was gassed at Messines; he was transferred to Tooting Hospital in South London, England and found to be suffering from a tubercle of the lung. [T.B.] He was returned to Australia on 27th September 1917 and discharged from the army on 26th December 1917 as medically unfit for further service.

He died at Queensland, N.S.W.

He is one of five Australian soldiers of the Great War who are commemorated on the Tain War Memorial.
