Alfred John Goodhand was born in 1877 in Mt Gambier. He grew up in Beachport and worked as a railway ganger. At 39 he enlisted into the army on the 1st of May 1916. Alfred left for France on the 16th of August 1916. He landed at Plymouth and then was sent to Etaples, a small coastal town in France, on the 6th of January 1917. 1 month later he joined up with the 32nd Battalion in Fricourt on the 7 of Febuary 1917. After 2 months in the field Alfred fell ill with myalgia. He was then sent to a hospital in Rouen, France. After 8 months Alfred rejoined his unit in Le Harve on the 13th of December 1917. On the 15th of January 1918 he fell sick again. The doctors could not find out what was wrong with him. On the 22nd of Febuary Alfred was sent back to England. He was then sent back to Australia on the 19th of April 1918 and was discarged for premature senility (lack of physical fitness). Details of his later life are not known.
