MR. CON O'BRIEN DIES
Mr. Bartholomew Corenelius O'Brien, head of the well known O'Brien family, of the Court Hotel, died at midnight last night. He is the third member of the family to die within three months.
Mrs. Fred Jager, formerly Miss Kathleen O'Brien, died on October 20 at 32, a little more than a fortnight after the death of her mother. Another poignant feature of the family's recent history was the death of the wife of one of the surviving sons, Clarence less than, two years, ago.
Mr. Con O'Brien was aged 71. He had been in ill-health for two years.
FIRST LABOR M.L.C.
For 35 years he was actively engaged in the management of the Court Hotel, which will now be carried on by his sons, Stan and Clarence. He was a prominent member of the Labor Party and was the first Labor member elected to the Legislative Council in December, 1900 — an election which he won on the casting vote of the returning officer. He remained a member of the Council until May, 1904, stood again in 1908, and was again elected for the Central Province.
Mr. O'Brien will be remembered as the leading figure, on a white horse, of the St. Patrick's Day procession through Perth. He led the procession at its inception and for many years afterwards.
PUT HIS AGE BACK TO ENLIST
He was born in Ballarat and came to this State more than 40 years ago, to be one of the. first on the Murchison goldflelds. He conducted a hotel at Cue before he came to Perth, and was elected Mayor of the northern town. Putting his age back, he joined the A.I.F. during the Great War, and served as a private with the 11th Battalion.
Requiem Mass will be held in St. Mary's Cathedral at 9 a.m. tomorrow, and the funeral will arrive at Karrakatta Cemetery at 10.
