23 May 1919: Honoured Military Medal, The Battle of Amiens, 'On 12th August, 1918, east of PROYART, Corporal McCROCHON led a patrol of 5 to push out ahead of PROYART Village. He rushed an active machine gun just on the edge of the Village and after a bomb fight captured it and its garrison from a flank. He continued to push forward by rushes in the face of heavy machine gun fire showing considerable skill in his handling of his men. On reaching his objective - the railway line - he was still under aimed machine gun fire but he continued sniping so as to cover the advance of adjoining patrols, all the while keeping his Company Commander supplied with valuable information. Throughout he displayed bravery, determination and leadership of a high order.'

77 years ago today, on the afternoon of the 11th March 1947, Corporal William Clive McCrohon (M.M.), 8th Battalion (Reg No-2730), boilermaker from 'Bally Brae', Albert Avenue, Chatswood, New South Wales and Copeton, N.S.W. (1919) and 29 Whaling Road, South Sydney, N.S.W. (1921) and the Oriental Hotel, Cooks Hill, N.S.W. (1923) and 8 Durham Road, Lambton, N.S.W. (1940), father of three, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 52. CATHOLIC 2-51. 99.

Born at Tingha, New South Wales on the 29th September 1894 to William L, died 1902, Newtown, N.S.W. and Fanny (Frances) McCrohon, died 1909, Canterbury, N.S.W.; husband of Grace Amelia McCrohon nee Jenner, married 1923, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 31.12.1969, Hamilton, N.S.W., age 75, sleeping here.

William enlisted on the 16th September 1916 with the 37th Battalion at the Showground Camp, Sydney, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A24 Benalla on the 9th November 1916.

Admitted to hospital 12.9.1918 (gingivitis - early form of gum disease), 6.3.1919 (abscess of arm).

Granted Special Leave to England and France from 1.12.1918 to 27.12.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 3.5.1919.

Awarded Military Medal 21.1.1919.

Mr. McCrohon’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I haved placed poppies at William’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
