Let us remember a Fallen Soldier of The Great War memorialised at Mimi Cemetery, N.S.W.

On the 14th September 1917, Sapper Norman Rolf Shiels, 1st Australian Tunnelling Company (Reg No-5617), wheeler from opposite Police Station, Church Street, Minmi, New South Wales, was Killed in Action at Hill 60, Ieper (Ypres) Messines, Belgium or Hellfire Corner, age 20 years 9 months. Cause of death unknown.

No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.

Born at Hobart, Tasmania? Jan? 1897? to Gilbert Archibald (died 9.1.1922, Minmi, N.S.W., age 66, buried at Right Hand Side, Section 16, Plot 013), from Church Street, Minmi, New South Wales, and Jessie Shiels (died 10.2.1933, Cessnock, N.S.W., age?, name not inscribed on headstone, sleeping at Right Hand Side, Section 16, Plot 013), from Church Street, Minmi, New South Wales.

Norm enlisted on the 2nd May 1916 with the Tunnelling Companies, October 1916, Reinforcements, age 19 years 4 months, at Minmi, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A38 Ulysses on the 25th October 1916.
Disembarked Plymouth, England 28.12.1916.
Proceeded O/Seas to France from Folkestone, England 28.1.1917.

Taken on Strength 1st Australian Tunnelling Company 3.3.1917.

Admitted to hospital 12.3.1917 (scabies).

Norm is resting at Menin Road South Military Cemetery, Belgium. Plot II Row C Grave 5.

Place of Association - Minmi, New South Wales, Australia.

Mr. Shiels's name has been inscribed on the Minmi Roll of Honour Minmi St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour and the Star of Minmi Lodge, No. 1606, G.U.O.O.F.

I have placed poppies at the Shiels memorialised gravesite in remembrance of the service and supreme sacrifice of their son Norm for God, King & Country. Right Hand Side, Section 16, Plot 013.
