Sidney trained at Liverpool and embarked for Egypt on the HMAT Star of England on March 8, 1916. He arrived in France with the 45th Battalion in June 1916, experienced fighting at Pozieres in the Somme and was promoted to Lance Corporal on August 24, 1916. After recovering in England from a gunshot wound to his left forearm and facing several charges of being absent without leave, Sidney was sent back to France in time for the 54th Battalion’s last major battle of the war at St Quentin Canal on September 29, 1918. Sidney returned to Australia on the Devanha on May 8, 1919 and was discharged in Sydney on July 19, 1919.
