Biography contributed by Heathfield High School

Leslie Wilfred Chandler 25/1/1894 – 3/10/1941

Leslie Wilfred Chandler was born in Tanunda, South Australia, Australia on the 25th of January 1894. He was a ‘natural born’ Australian. Leslie was a Christian and a part of the Anglican Church of England. He grew up in Tanunda, Barossa - South Australia, Australia with his father Joseph David Chandler. Before enlisting in the war, he was a motor mechanic. Prior to enlistment and serving in the war in 1915 Leslie fractured his right wrist in N.S.W and was out of action for 10 months.

Leslie was a part of the 48th Infantry Battalion in the AIF where he served as a private and a driver, his service number was 3866. The 48th Battalion was raised in Egypt on 16 March 1916 as part of the "doubling" of the AIF. Half of its recruits were Gallipoli veterans from the 16th battalion and the other half were reinforcements from Australia which is where Leslie joined from. The 48th's first major battle on the Western Front was Pozieres. Here, the battalion was tasked with defending ground captured in earlier attacks by the 2nd Division and entered the firing line on two separate occasions - 5 to 7 and 12 to 15 August. The 48th was also required to defend ground captured during the battle of Mouquet Farm which is near Pozieres. 20 Oct 1914 - 31 Dec 1920. There were no records of Leslie being injured in the war.

Leslie was discharged 30th August 1919. Leslie died on the 3rd of October 1941 at the age of 47 and the cause of his death is unknown. He is buried at Mannum Cemetery (Old Section) Row 4B, Block 236, Plot 3
