Kapunda Herald (SA: 1878 - 1951) Friday 20 December 1918

Pte. P. McInerney,M.M.

Pte.P. Mclnerney, M.M., writing his mother from France on September 12, says:—"We have been busy lately chasing Fritz, and have hardly ever spent two nights in the one place. The last bit of fighting, before the enemy retreated, was very severe. I am writing this letter in a much-fought over town on the bend of a river; the Germans held it a week ago. The other day I was awarded the Military Medal, and must say it was a surprise, because I thought everyone was doing as much as I was. In the letter I received from the O.C. conveying the congratulations of the Division Commander and Corps Officer, he said that it was given for courage and devotion to duty in the operations on August 8 and 9. It was a bit hot on the   second day, and a line had to be laid through heavy machine gun and shell fire, bat I was too excited with the stunt to think of danger. I am sending a piece of the ribbon, which is all I have at present; the medal itself will come later. The weather is beginning to get very cold and wet, and I hope we soon go away for our spell. I think the Aussies have earned one in this stunt. I saw Pat Kerin about a week ago, and was speaking to Harold Turner to-day."
