Private Brownfield was the only son of Mrs Susan Brownfield, of Martin Street, Ballarat East. He was in his 19th year, and was educated at the Eureka Street State school. Prior to enlisting he was working at the Sunnyside Woollen Mills. Brownfield was the sole support of his widowed mother. He had only left Australia on during late December 1915.
