Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

Norman McLeod was the son of Kenneth and Sophia McLeod of Calliope, Queensland. His brother Archie McLeod 15th Battalion also enlisted and was twice wounded, but returned to Australia in 1919.

Norman was reported killed in action during the 49th Battalion’s assault on the formidable Mouquet Farm position in early September 1916. His remains were lost during the very heavy fighting.

A letter from his father in his service file epitomises the feelings of many parents who could find no information as to the fate of their loved ones, other than the official notification.

No.3 Dairy, Calliope Station, Gladstone, Queensland, 29th August 1917.

“Dear Sir,

A year now has elapsed since your office reported the death of my son, 4542 Private N.A. McLeod 49th Battalion killed in action in France. No further particulars as to the spot which he was killed, how he was killed, or what has become of his belongings have reached me. Surely the parents should get further information than just merely a wire announcing his son’s death. I shall be extremely obliged if you can supply me with further information….,

Yours faithfully, Kenneth McLeod, P.S. Surely there is a record of his belongings somewhere?”
