An Original Anzac who served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

59 years ago today, on the 14th May 1964, Private Robert John Freeman, 13th Battalion (Reg No-1006), loco fireman from Minmi, New South Wales and 89 Beaumont Street, Hamilton, N.S.W. and 7 Chinchen Street, North Lambton, N.S.W. and 24 Heaton Street, Jesmond, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 70. ANGLICAN 2-114. 41.

Born at Minmi, New South Wales on the 1st May 1894 to Samuel and Isabella Freeman; husband of Ada May Freeman nee Johns (married 22.11.1919 at the Register Office, Lambeth, London, England, died 20.6.1980, age 80, sleeping beside Robert - ANGLICAN 2-114. 43), Robert enlisted on the 18th October 1914 at Broadmeadows, Victoria.

Unit embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board Transport A38 Ulysses on the 22nd December 1914.

Admitted to hospital 7.6.1915 (rheumatism), 18.9.1916 (tonsillitis), 3.6.1917 (tonsillitis), 22.6.1917 (folliculitis), 31.10.1917 (gas poisoning, mild), 18.5.1918 (orchitis), 15.6.1918 (influenza), 29.6.1918 (trench fever).

Wounded in action - 7.8.1917 (GSW left shoulder, slight), 26.10.1917 (gas).

Invalided to England 28th June 1918.

Robert was granted Special 1914 Leave, and returned home on the 25thDecember 1918.

Reenlisted-13.6.1919, (Reg No-85994, Escort Gunman Repatriation Unit) Holsworthy, N.S.W.

Returned home on the 24th October 1920 with wife and 2 children, being discharged on the 8th December 1920.

Mr. Freeman’s name has been inscribed on the Minmi Roll of Honour, Minmi St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Roll of Honour, Lambton Park Citizens' Memorial Gates and the Lambton and New Lambton Municipal District Roll of Honor.

I have placed poppies at Robert’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.

Mr. Freeman has not been officially commemorated, so I will be submitting an application to DVA asking for a Commonwealth War Graves Plaque to be placed at the gravesite.
