"THE LATE PRIVATE O. J. CUMBERLAND.
Much reference has been made of late concerning Private O. J. Cumberland, of Scone, but the following official telegram, received by the Rev. F. A. Cadell, of Scone, from Colonel Luscombe, of Victoria Barracks, places beyond all doubt that the young soldier met his death on Gallipoli, where his younger brother, Joseph, also received fatal wounds:
— "Officially reported that No. 1087, Private O. J. Cumberland, 2nd Battalion, previously reported missing, now reported killed in action on 8th August, 1915. Please inform Mrs. A. Saunders (sister), Kelly-street, Scone, and convey deep regret, and sympathy of their Majesties the King, and Queen and the Commonwealth Government in the loss that she and the army have sustained by the death of the soldier." - from the Scone Advocate 02 Jun 1916 (nla.gov.au)
