Biography contributed by Rodney Torpy
This is the small amount I know about David Campbell and his family.Iam the Grandson of his half sister Cathleen De Mamiel.
Davids father Alexander Ogilvie Campbell was a teacher who joined the police force, and was speared by aborigines. He died from these wounds in Wyndham Western Australia. He was married to Elizabeth Campbell-née Green.Davids mum.
After her husband's death Elizabeth travelled to Moora Western Australia with David and his sister Mary Ann Campbell. Here she meet John Wallace they had two other children William Patrick Wallace and my nan CathleenWallace / De Mamiel. My mum is Maureen De mamiel and ninety six years old.She talks about her aunty May and David.David was home schooled because his mum built the first town house in Moora and it was also a school and home bakery. He later probably went to Moora State. School.
Mum said at first the army didn't want David because he was only nearly 5ft 3ins but later discovered he belonged to the Moora rifle club and was a crack shot.As far as i know he worked in a grocery shop.
From what my mum tell me his mother was devastated by his death and didn't really get over it.He has a tree and a plaque in Kings Park near the adventure play ground.
