Hubert was the ninth of eleven children of Henry Rowe Trethewie JP (born 1851 in Launceston, Tasmania) and second wife Emily Maria Talbot (born 1862 in Evandale, Tasmania). Henry - a Farmer - and Emily married in 1879 in Evandale, Tasmania, where they settled and raised their family. Henry was regarded as a fine horseman, was a judge at horse and cattle shows, and a breeder and exhibitor of horses and cattle. He served as a JP and was a member of the Evandale Municipal Council.

Hubert was a Farmer at Evandale, Tasmania when he enlisted in the AIF in March 1916. In his Attestation Papers he stated that he had served as a Lance Corporal with the 26th Australian Light Horse Regiment (Tasmanian Mounted Infantry. Hubert served as a Private and Lieutenant (Service No:73) with 40th Australian Infantry Battalion and WiA on two occasions in France - Gassed in June 1917, and suffered a severe gunshot wound to the right ankle in March 1918. He was Discharged in September 1918. Son Henry (Harry) Roy Trethewie (Corporal, RAAF, Service No:428032) and Sons-in-Law Geoffrey Allen (Flight Sergeant, RAAF, Service No:428170) and Harry Owen Crocker (Leading Aircraftman, RAAF, Service No:88744) served in WWII.

Hubert returned to Evandale where in 1921 he married Elizabeth Margaret Fairbairn Lindsay (born 1895 in Evandale, Tasmania). Hubert and Elizabeth settled in Evandale where Hubert was a Farmer and Pastoralist. Hubert died in 1970 and Elizabeth in 1976.
