88 years ago today, on the Sunday afternoon of the 10th July 1932 (4 funerals on this day), Private Edward Osbourne Harding, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion, wharf labourer from Newcastle, New South Wales and 49 Bruce Street, Cooks Hill, N.S.W., father of three, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 53. ANGLICAN 2-119. 22.

Born at Peckham, Kent, England about 1880 to Walter and Clara Harding nee Herbert of 5 Champion Park, Sydenham, London, England; husband of Agnes Harding nee Browning (married 1919, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 1940, also sleeping here - http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article167530731), Edward enlisted May 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W., and returned home August 1918, reason unclear.

Edward’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle Wharf Labourers' Union Roll of Honor (photo, unveiled date unknown).

There is no headstone at Mr Harding’s gravesite to tell us that he served with the 1st A.I.F., now long forgotten, so August 2018 I placed a cross adorned with poppies on the gravesite, taken a photo of the grave and uploaded the photo onto the Northern Cemetery website as a permanent record of his service.
