Bedwell William was born on 22nd October, 1893 in Plumstead, London, England as William BEDWELL

His mother was Doris Elizabeth Mary BELL - she married Charles James SURMAN on 4th July, 1914 in the Methodist Manse in Solomontown, South Australia as a widow under the surname of BEDWELL - Doris died in NSW in 1949 & her husband Charles James SURMAN died in Jesmond, NSW in 1928

William & his brother Albert along with their Mother Doris had arrived in Sydney in October 1908 on board the ship Suffolk as unassisted immigrant - they were using the surname SURMAN at that stage

He enlisted in Adelaide on 8th June 1918 & died in England on 20th October, 1918 from Influenza and pneumonia and is buried in the Sutton Veny (St John) churchyard in Wiltshire

Inscription on his headstone reads:

'HEARTS MAY ACHE,  TEARS MAY FALL

FOR FREEDOMS CAUSE,  HE GAVE HIS ALL"
