George Henry Mace was born on 5 April 1893 in London, England, and later settled in Australia. He enlisted for World War I service at Nambucca Heads, New South Wales, on 31 January 1916 and was allocated to the 36th Battalion. He embarked from Sydney on 13 May 1916 aboard the A72 Beltana and underwent training in England, where he spent periods in Fargo Military Hospital in late 1916. Mace proceeded to France on 22 November 1916 and served on the Western Front. He was promoted to Sergeant on 28 August 1916. On 8 June 1917, while serving in Belgium, he sustained a gunshot wound to the right thigh, resulting in a compound fracture of the femur, and was evacuated to England for treatment at the 5th London General Hospital. He was subsequently diagnosed with war-related nervous symptoms and returned to Australia on 25 November 1917. Upon medical review, he was discharged from the AIF on 29 May 1918 as medically unfit.
Mace re-enlisted for World War II service in June 1940 at Caloundra, Queensland. He was posted to the 15th Garrison Battalion of the Australian Military Forces and employed in clerical duties due to physical limitations associated with his previous injury. His medical classification restricted him to home service only. As his health declined, he was again assessed as medically unfit and discharged in February 1943.
Sergeant George Henry Mace died on 16 April 1946, aged 53, and was interred in Anzac Portion 7, Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane.
After decades without recognition at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice. His identity and dignity have now been restored.
We have remembered him.
Lest We Forget.
