Percy Reginald Shackleford was born in approximately 1893 in Parkside, South Australia. He lived on Aroona Road in Kilkenny with his mother, Mrs. Susan Shackleford. A member of The Church of England, Percy was a single man who worked as a bricklayer. He had a tan complexion, grey eyes, and brown hair.
At 21 years and 11 months, Percy enlisted in military service. He served in France during World War I, where he was injured and subsequently hospitalised in England. Following his recovery, Percy returned to the frontlines in France to continue his service.
