Peter Oliver Smith was the son of William and Jessie Smith, of Wirrate, Victoria. He was born at Bailieston, Victoria in 1893. His parents and family were living at Wyalkatchem, Western Australia when he enlisted in the 44th Battalion.
His two younger brothers also enlisted on the same day in Western Australia during August 1916.
His brother, 3213 Private James Smith 51st Battalion AIF, was killed in action near Ypres, Belgium on 14 October 1917, aged 24. The other brother, 3207 Lance Corporal William Oliver Smith was killed in action at Villiers Bretonneux on 24 April 1918, aged 26.
Peter served with the 44th Battalion and though evacuated to England dangerously ill with pneumonia at the end of 1918, he was returned to Australia in 1919.
