'Mr. G. Davis received a wire from Mr. Moncrieff, senr., of " Kurrajong," Lockhart, on Friday last, stating that his son, Private Herbert J. Moncrieff, had been killed in action on July 31st. By his death is removed another of the fine type of young men who have left this district at the call of Empire-a type not excelled in any part of the world. "Bert" Moncrieff had resided in this district for about four years prior to enlisting, working his " Oakvale " Farm on the Yalgogrin road. When he first made application for enlistment he was turned down, being informed that he would have to undergo an operation before he could be accepted. Shortly afterwards, he submitted himself again and underwent the necessary operation. He was accepted for service on May 4th, 1910. The deceased soldier hero was 28 years of age. Of a quiet, unassuming disposition, he was upright and honorable in all his actions, and gained the goodwill and esteem of everyone. Another brother has also been on active for a longer period.'
