Alfred’s elder brother, 1743A Pte. Thomas Michael McEwan 59th Battalion was also killed in action on the same day, 19 July 1916. Their parents were both deceased.
Alfred John McEwan served with the 8th Battalion for a short time on Gallipoli. He transferred to the 60th Battalion during the reorganization of the AIF in early 1916. He was only in France for a few weeks before his unit was almost decimated during the attack at Fromelles.
Alfred was just “Reported Missing, 19 July 1916.” Until a Court of Enquiry, held in the field, 4 August 1917, pronounced his fate as 'Killed in Action, 19 July 1916'. He was only 20 years of age. Alfred gave his home town as Cowarr, Victoria.
His remains were found in 1920 and buried in the Ration Farm Military Cemetery. His identity disc was returned to the family in 1921.
