Son of William and Theresa POWELL - mother remarried at time of his enlistment - Mrs Teresa Perrin, 221 Errard Street, Ballarat South, Victoria
Dave Powell (SN 978) was born in Sebastopol and attended the Sebastopol State School. He had served four years in the Cadets, and a year in the Citizen Forces 70th Infantry (In Ballarat East) when, as a 19-year-old, single, Butcher he enlisted on 2nd March 1916. He embarked on the Ascanius in May with the 39th Battalion and transferred to the 8th Battalion after being posted to France in September that year. In September 1917, at Broodseinde, Belgium, he suffered a gunshot wound to his back resulting in a fractured spine. He died of his wounds on 3rd October 1917 and is buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery, France. It was then revealed he was just 17 years of age.
Mrs W. Perrin, of Eyre street, late of Sebastopol, has been advised that her son, Pte D. Powell, has died of wounds received in France. He enlisted from Sebastopol, and went to the Front with the 39th Battalion. A thoughtful act was performed by Mrs H. C. Madden, of Sebastopol, who, as soon as the news became known, placed a cross and card on tree planted in Birdwood Avenue, Sebastopol, in memory of the deceased soldier.
