Private Edgar Lane (Service No:4525) enlisted in the AIF on 1 September 1915 with 20th Castlemaine Depot Battalion, and was attached to 5th Infantry Battalion 14th Reinforcement on 28 January 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Melbourne for Alexandria on board HMAT A32 Themistocles. Private Lane embarked for Marseilles from Alexandria on 2 May 1916 for service on the Western Front. In October 1916 he was WiA in France (GSW), and was attached to 46th Infantry Battalion on 8 September 1919 when he embarked from England for Melbourne on board HT Raranga. Private Lane was attached to 46th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 17 January 1920.

Edgar was born in Maldon, Victoria in 1894, ninth of twelve children of Benjamin Lane (b1855 in Auckland, New Zealand) and Ellen Avery Rickard (b1859 in Adelaide, South Australia). Benjamin was a Miner in Maldon in 1878 when he and Ellen married. They settled in Maldon where they raised their family and Benjamin was a Miner until his death in 1909.

Edgar worked in Maldon as a Labourer and Cyanider, served for two years in the Militia, and in 1914 married his first wife Ruby Alma Wilson (b1895 in Maldon, Victoria). Following his Discharge from the Army, Edgar was in Melbourne in 1919 when he divorced Ruby and, in 1920, remarried to Florence Elizabeth Nicholson (b1901 in Maldon, Victoria). Edgar and Fornece settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Edgar worked as an Ironmoulder. Retiring to Bendigo in the early 1960s, Edgar died in 1964 and Florence in 1971.
