Let us remember a Fallen soldier of The Great War awaiting memorialisation at Sandgate Cemetery.
On the 10th August 1916, Private Stanley Thompson, 2nd Australian Field Ambulance (Reg No-8615), shop assistant from 70 Bruce Street, Cooks Hill, New South Wales, was Killed in Action, age 20 years 10 months. Place and cause of death unknown.
No Australian Red Cross Wounded and Missing File.
Born at Adamstown, New South Wales on the 17th October 1895 to James Thompson (Police Constable, died 22.10.1897, Newcastle, N.S.W., age?) from Charlestown, N.S.W., and Sarah Ann Shaw nee Rogers (remarried to First Class Police Constable John F Shaw 1913, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 24.9.1933, New Lambton, N.S.W., age 68, name not inscribed on headstone plaque, METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) N SW. 30, of 94 Lambton Road, New Lambton, N.S.W., Sarah died 28.8.1926, New Lambton, N.S.W., age 69, mother of 4) of Rose Street, Merewether, N.S.W. (1917), and "Stanley", 94 Lambton Road, New Lambton, N.S.W., Stan enlisted on the 18th July 1915 with the 5th Australian Field Ambulance at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A60 Aeneas on the 20th December 1915.
Admitted to hospital 17.3.1916 (not stated).
Mr. Thompson is resting at Gordon Dump Cemetery, France. Plot V Row H Grave 4.
Place of Association – Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.
Stan’s name has been inscribed on the Gardner Memorial and the Charlestown Public School Honor Roll – unveiled on the 13th December 1917, 55 names inscribed.
Unfortunately, there is no memorial inscription on the Sarah Ann Shaw headstone plaque to tell us of the loss of her son during The Great War, and I am unable to erect a Memorial cross, so I have placed poppies at the gravesite in remembrance of Stan’s service and supreme sacrifice for God, King & Country. METHODIST 1 (WESLEYAN) N SW. 30.
