Son of Charles James Unstead and Margaret Unstead nee Kennedy of Hawker, SA.

Brother of Harold Unstead who returned on Australia on 24 August 1919 having served with the 12th Field Artillery Brigade and Leslie Victor Unstead who returned to Australia on 10 August 1919 having served with the 4th Light Horse Regiment

Next of kin given as his brother Albert Unstead of Natimuk, Victoria.

23 November 1914 - enlisted at Melbourne with the 6th Battalion with the rank of Private.

31 March 1916 - transferred to the 46th Battalion.

5 June 1918 - wounded. 

Commenced return to Australia on 25 January 1919 aboard HT Ceramic disembarking on 23 March 1919

Medals: 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal

22 May 1919 - discharged at the 3rd Military District
