Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Jack was the eldest of five children of John William Marshall (born 1865 at Taranaki in New Zealand) and Mary Ann Taylor (born 1897 at Daylesford in Victoria). John and Mary Ann married in 1890 in Melbourne, Victoria.

Jack worked as a Leather Dresser in Melbourne, and in January 1915 enlisted in the AIF as a Private (Service No:1781) with 8th Infantry Battalion. He was WiA at Gallipoli and Hospitalised at Malta before being sent to England. Jack was Discharged in September 1916 (Medical - Deafness). Brother Frederick Leslie (Service No:2870) also served in WWI. There is considerable confusion in Jack's military records (National Archives Australia) over his Service Number - it is variously recorded as 1781 and 1561. Army correspondence in 1920 confirms that the correct Service No is 1781.

Jack returned to Melbourne and worked in the Leather trade. In 1918 he married Esther Herbert (born 1891 in Melbourne, Victoria). Jack and Esther settled at Box Hill in 1919, where Jack worked as a Postman. Esther died in 1944, and Jack remarried in 1960 to Widow Agnes Adelaide de Sanna (nee Hill, born 1894 in Melbourne, Victoria). Jack and Adelaide settled at Ringwood in Melbourne, Victoria where Jack was retired. He died in 1972 and Adelaide in 1987.
